GROTA ZL3KB

The Green Radios On The Air (GROTA) group investigates the history and technical operations of ex WWII army transceivers.

At the GROTA conference session, there will be an overview of the equipment used, the group membership and the trials and experiments carried out in the last twelve months. These include groundwave propagation trials over various terrains. The meeting will be in conjunction with live demonstrations of Green Radios throughout the weekend.

Phil has been designing HF transmitters and receivers for more than half a century and sees no reason to stop just yet.   

The ZL-10X which Phil has been describing in his ‘Technical Notebook’ column in Break-In was conceived as a 10-band (160-10m) modular transceiver that even Mark ZL3AB could build, whilst at the same time having excellent performance. Phil will talk about some of the aspects of the design, architecture, direct digital synthesis, building high performance crystal filters and more – but what he would really like is for people to come and ask questions.  He will also have an early Mk1 ZL-10X to look at and a Mk2 ZL-10X which will power up.

With the developments in digital low signal modes is it time to look at these as an alternative to our ageing and diminishing beacons.

There are some real advantages in going digital and this presentation will explore these and provide some ideas on how one could be constructed.

Condor/TR105 ZL2PD

The bright yellow AWA TR-105 manpack and Codan 8822 (Condor) handheld search and rescue HF SSB transceivers are well known to most NZ hams. Andrew ZL2PD will present a brief introduction to the original equipment and describe the modifications required to convert these radios to 80m and 40m amateur radio use. Some of the technical challenges encountered will be highlighted along with ATU and replacement battery suggestions.
